I ask because it is quite a serious topic and it seems to me that you know quite a bit
It's not hard to google some statistics on prevalence and transmission rate of different types of STDs. In general the risks of BBBJ are quite low, pharnygeal gonorrhea is amongst heterosexual interactions are quite low, and the transmission rate is not great. Other rates of STDs like herpes and HIV are even lower. However that doesn't mean there is no risk, with each exposure your risk obviously increases. It's just a probability game, eventually you're gonna roll the dice and hit snake eyes. So the most important thing if you are not protecting yourself at all times, and enjoying a bit more risky behavior like BBBJs is to get tested periodically, whether you have symptoms or not. I suggest testing every 3 months at your local GP or sexual health clinic.

Alot of symptoms with the common STDs (ie. gonorrhea, chlamydia, although trichomonas is creeping up) is very vague, even more so for women. So you can be contracting it from your favorite WL and they don't even know they got it. For men, it's still over about 60% of people not having any symptoms for up to 3-6 months with gonorrhea and chlamydia, the most common symptoms being some abnormal discharge and painful urination. The problem with not having symptoms is it can cause some serious long-term health effects. Unlike herpes that the OP is worried about (which mostly only causes symptomatic painful outbreaks and embarassment), gonorrhea and chlamydia can cause permanent infertility, pelvic inflammatory diseases and epididymitis (your balls become super swollen) requiring surgical intervention.

So TL;DR, BBBJ is "relatively" safe especially compared to BBFS but you should be getting tested every 3 months to make sure you are covered and not spreading diseases.

Jesus, instead of trying to argue who has a bigger dick here, you guys should actually be trying to respond to Bawal who started this thread.

None of you can match Mr Nejums in that department anyway.

If its true you contracted and passed on Herpes or any STI to your wife you should be upfront and honest.

Its a low act to come up with an excuse.

If youve infected her its a life sentence not of her doing.

The results should be available within 3-4 days. The silence could suggest bad news. Let's hope it's not.

Thank you all for your support and advice over the last couple of days. It helped me in thinking through this issue.
But I'd like to especially thank both brother schingchang & krnboy in giving in-depth and professional advice on this specific topic.

My partner received the result yesterday and HSV-1 virus and blisters were detected on her female part.
I think that's bad, but also glad it wasn't HSV-2.

I will go and get myself checked out over the weekend. Beforehand, may I ask a couple of further questions:
    1. Since my partner is now HSV-1 positive and if I'm not, we would like to have a family (involves BBFS) in the future. Does it mean this will not be possible without me being transmitted too?
    2. If HSV-1 couldn't be detected on my dick, does it mean HSV-1 only lives in my mouth/lips? hence, I should avoid any kissing activities/sharing food etc. in the future to not spread this virus further.

I understand this virus won't kill but it's annoying. Up until now, I have not discovered any obvious symptoms or it doesn't bother me physically yet.
But now, thinking back, I wonder why I often have cold sores during winter. But warmer seasons are fine.

It is possible that your partner has been infected for sometime but this outbreak could be her first. The virus can live dormant for quite sometime before an outbreak occurs.

However if your test comes back negative, then.....????

If you already have HSV1 in your system (lets say in your mouth) and she has HSV1 down there and you do BBFS, then you wont get it in your dick because you already have it. Dont worry too much bud. HSV1 is common. I got tested because i was curious to know and apparently i got HSV1 too but never had a breakout. You have cold sores in winter because your immune system is low.

I aint in the medical field so i might be wrong but i did a lot of research myself before

Ok so, if she came back positive for HSV-1 and they did a swap on her blisters and also confirms HSV-1, we are pretty sure she has genital herpes. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can cause genital herpes, she just may have the slightly milder strain, but she effectively has genital herpes. The recurrence of outbreaks for HSV-1 is roughly 1/3 while HSV-2 outreaks are a bit more common like 2/3s. To answer your question...

    1. If after you get tested, and you aren't HSV-1 positive, you can obviously still have BBFS. Like I said earlier, when she doesn't have an outbreak. So I assume she either has a prescription for acyclovir (an anti-viral medication) or is going to get one that will help if the blisters are bad. However, if it has progressed enough, the anti-virals don't do much, her body's own immune system will fight off the infection usually in about 2-3 weeks. During this time when she has an active infection, with symptoms, she is much more at risk to transmit this virus to you if you guys do BBFS. I suggest avoiding that, or use protection (condoms are your best bet) to lower the risk of transmission to you. While she is healed and has no active infection, the transmission rate is quite low, although still possible. Some patients who have really bad outbreaks, can take acyclovir or similar antiviral as a preventative medication before trying for BBFS with their partner for conception. Another thing to consider once you guys do become pregnant is she probably may want to elect having a c-section due to possible transmission to your baby through the birth canal with a natural birth, that would not be good. So yes, you can protect yourself (If you use a condom all the time) or only doing BBFS during when she has no symptoms to lower your risk (doesn't mean no risk though)

    2. While like others have said, the virus is in your body forever, it likes to stay dormant in a particular area of your spinal cord avoiding your immune system. It also likes to travel down in that same nerve back to its original infection site. So whether you got it first on your lips, or your genitals, thats USUALLY where it likes to go back to. So yes if you get cold sores and its HSV-1, you are unlikely to contract HSV-1 genital herpes. There has been cases where you do get concurrent infections in two areas, but is much more rare. It doesn't mean you can't get cold sores from HSV-1 on your lips then HSV-2 genital herpes however, that is more common. The best part to avoid transmission is to avoid contact of the blisters (whether genital or sore) during an active infection, and wait till it heals up as your viral load would be much lower then.

If you normally have cold sores, you probably already have HSV-1. As someone have mentioned, your immune system is a bit lowered during cold weather, so the virus becomes more opportunitistic in the colder months. You may have given that to her during DATY if she has never contracted HSV-1. Although I assume you kiss her more often then DATY, but who knows. Maybe you guys just get down like that.

It is important for women and their partners planning a pregnancy to know that neonatal herpes only occurs when the virus is caught for the first time in the very late stage of pregnancy and not in women experiencing recurrent outbreaks.”

You’re much better talking to a GP about it though than relying on anonymous random people on a forum or anything on the internet really.
Yea...and the reason it is rare because...the pregnant women....get c-sections...like...I...said. Can't get herpes if the baby never goes down the rabbit hole.

Although I do agree it is better talking to a doctor in the flesh. The physicians at the sexual health clinics are better suited then your run of the mill GP though. They are generally much more knowlegable on STIs. For pregnancy related issues, I suggest your favorite OB/GYN. It is alot better then random people like me on the internet, who knows, I could just be quoting different internet articles.

Lol, does that make logical sense to you? Like even if you didn't know anything about medicine. Why would the virus not be transmissable the second time around? ...The virus is just like nah, I wouldn't want to infect this newborn who has barely any immune system, I'll skip that.

If they got an active genital herpes infection going on late in their 3rd trimester, planned c-section will definitely be discussed.

Ok cool, lets play with the stats then instead of quoting some news article. Most recent article in the Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, 2014. James et al.,

"Mother-to-child transmission can occur in utero (5%), during the peripartum period (85%), or postnatally (10%) [15]. HSV is not transmitted through breast milk; rather, postnatal acquisition of HSV is due to direct contact with a person shedding the virus, usually via an orolabial or other cutaneous lesion. " - So..peripartum peroid..through contact with labia through birth canal (hence get a c-section). Check.

"Because of the increasing incidence of HSV-1 genital infections, the majority of neonatal HSV infections in many parts of the world now are caused by HSV-1 " OP's significant partner has HSV-1. Check.

"Brown et al. demonstrated an increased transmission risk of 57% in women with first-episode primary genital infections, and a 2% risk increase in those with recurrent genital lesions" Hmmm doesn't appear to be 0%. Not sure if you want to gamble having your kid acquire something with a 1/3 mortality rate and permanent morbidity. Check.

The virus is thinking that mom passed a few antibodies over via the placenta. So it ain't as easy but it sure isn't 0%.

I mean hey, I know most bros on here like to gamble with their own lives, myself included. But that ain't fair to your maybe future child right? Come on.

Thanks krnboy. After thinking this issue through, I actually feel like the issue is more common than most people think. As you (also the GP) said, people can easily get affected by HSV-1 when immune system is weak and especially during winter time. e.g. cold sores, mouth ulcers etc.

Thanks bro schingchang, I read all your posts and I think they had more substance than what I heard from the GP

When I punt, I always wear the dom and I don't do DFK or DATY. Only in some occasions, the cheeky lady will give light kisses for goodbye or fun. But yea, I don't punt when I got flu, cold sore or mouth ulcers etc.

Anyway, up to the community now whether you'd like to continue on this topic. But I do feel much much better now compare to when I first posted. Thanks heaps to krnboy and schingchang again! Excellent info throughout, hope others could benefit too.
